PHENO pronounced fee-no is electric guitarist/vocalist Jess Green’s new project and stage name. As Pheno, she is pioneering her own style of indie pop; Afro-Sci. She brings 21st century science to the wild rhythms of Afro beat, Indie rock and Jazz. This show celebrates the release of her first Pheno EP, titled ‘Dragon Year’ (out through Electric Ear Records in May 2017).

Performing with Jess are musicians featured on the EP; Alyx Dennison - Keys & Vocals (Kyu, Richard In Your Mind) and Bree van Reyk - Drums and Vocals (Holly Throsby, Paul Kelly, Synergy Percussion). Pheno’s music layers shimmering vocals, scorching electric guitars, synthesisers, and stomping backbeats. Her music is influenced by artists such as Tune-Yards and St Vincent with a huge nod to 80’s heroes David Bowie and Talking Heads.

Previous releases by Jess include; The Singing Fish and other Short Stories (Jazzgroove Records), Tinkly Tinkly (Yum Yum Tree / MGM), and The New Dynamites (Dead Set Records / Vitamin)

Press for Previous Albums:

"Sydney based guitarist, composer and singer Jess Green is another artist who deftly packs a vast array of influences into her music. Schooled in jazz, but proficient in blues, rock and many more esoteric forms, she excels at weaving seemingly disparate styles into coherent, dynamic pieces." Robbie Buck, The Inside Sleeve, ABC Radio National, January 2013

‘there's enough grunt to qualify for serious rock attention’. Michael Smith Drum Media, December 2008

Jess was based in Sydney for 12 years, touring and recording as a guitarist and vocalist with many groups including; The catholics, Jim Conway, Alyx Dennison, The 10 Guitar project, Gary Daley, Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band (Reignited), Petulant Frenzy and many more. She has performed at Byron Bay Blues Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Sydney Festival, as well as toured to Germany, Sweden and Malaysia. Jess is now based in Canberra.
